Code Free DVD Modifications

What is a code free modification?
DVD players come set up from the factory to play discs from only one region. For example, if you purchase your DVD player in North America it will come encoded to play region one discs. If you attempt to play a region 2 disc in your player you will get an error and be unable to play the disc.

With a code free modification you will be able play discs from any region in your DVD player without any errors. With the new RCE (Region Code Enhancing) discs you will want a modification that allows you to change the region code of your player rather than one that sets your code to “all regions”.

What is RCE (Region Code Enhancing)?
RCE is a software enhancement to the region coding which checks the players region code during the menu function in addition to startup. It is being added to all new region 1 discs and will cause an error if your code free DVD player is set to a region other than 1. This is why it’s important to find a modified player that allows you to change the region code rather than one that just sets the player to all regions.

What kinds of modifications are available?
Not all DVD player modifications are created equal. A poorly made or installed modification can affect your ability to play certain discs and can also have a detrimental effect on the picture quality. Modifying the sensitive electronics in a DVD player should be done in a clean, static free environment. You want to look for a modification that will allow you to change your region such as the ICOS 725 and make sure the modification is done in a static free environment.

Buy a new code free player or modify your existing DVD player?
There are companies out there that will modify your existing DVD player to be code free, you purchase the chip from them, send them your DVD player and they will modify your DVD player and ship it back to you. With all the shipping, the cost of the chip and the cost of the modification it often comes out to be less expensive to just purchase a brand new code free player. There is also the risk of sending your DVD player to a less than reputable company and either receiving your DVD player back damaged or not receiving your DVD player back at all. The risks and cost involved make me recommend going with a new code free player over sending yours off to get it modified.

Can I modify my player myself?
You can but it is a very involved process and demands precision skill with electronics, circuit boards, chips and a soldering iron. One mistake can render your DVD player into an expensive paperweight. Unless you do this sort of thing for a living I cannot recommend modifying your DVD yourself.

I hope his article answers your questions on region modifications for DVD players, if you are interested in purchasing a code free DVD player please see our list of recommended resellers. They all were selected because they use high quality modification done in a proper environment.
