In a few short words, DVD is the future of home viewing. It's the only way to fully enjoy a movie at home today -- and it is sure to gain more fans in the future.
The technical definition for DVD is Digital Versatile Disc (the V for Video has been dropped because of the vast ROM abilities and the potential sound technologies currently in use for DVD). If it helps, think of DVD as a CD you can watch. It looks better, sounds better and files away better than VHS and laserdisc. DVD offers many things that VHS simply can not. And even though laserdisc offered most of these special features, they are bulky and didn't have the range capacity that DVD has. DVD offers the ability to hold the average Hollywood movie on one side of the disc. That means, no changing or flipping discs, as you would with a laserdisc (which holds around an hour of film per side on a CLV disc). |

DVD also offers scanning, pausing, and chapter access which VHS can't. The benefits don't end there. DVDs can also be loaded with commentary tracks, language tracks (for Foreign films), subtitles, bonus materials, and trailers. Even though laserdisc offers alternate commentary tracks, they are limited to only two tracks - with DVD; it's pretty much unlimited. DVD offers the complete cinema experience. Depending upon the disc, you might also have parental lock for films that you don't want the kids to see, or alternate angles for movies that allow you to see the action at different perspectives. At this time, there is no need to wait for a better day to buy into DVD. The price is right and all the studios are involved as well. |
