Video Performance – 94/100
This is a new offering from LG with HDMI output and solid HD up conversion. I tested an older standard definition version of the DVD Black Hawk Down, which traditionally has lots of motion artifacts and grain. The LG-DN798 resolved the picture very nicely in the viewed 720p format. The code free modification PMC (Process Modification Chip Set) 425Z was excellent as well, performing the integration of European and Asian discs without incidence. The PAL system to NTSC system conversion was very fast from the 18mb converter and I didn’t notice any introduced artifacts in the picture image. This DVD player delivered a clear consistent image through multiple input tests.
Other Considerations – 93/100
The LG DN798 Code Free DVD player will play any DVD from anywhere in the world on an NTSC television (U.S.,Canada, Japan standard). It also up converts to several 720p, 1080i, and 1080p resolution though I found the two prior to view best. It contains a USB port which allows for picture viewing from a USB source. I was also excited to find the coaxial audio output, however the audio output DAC performance was only average – lacking clarity in from some material. The reverse function was slightly slow which is not unusual, but it’s a feature I use a lot so a must mention.
Value – 98/100
At around $300 this player is an excellent value. It has one of the finest region free hardware modifications I have tested to date. It “leaves in the dust” the previously reviewed Pioneer DV393 region free DVD player for a combination of price and features/quality.
