Pioneer DV-353 Review By Ed Brantley

Pioneer DV353 DVD Player
Model: Pioneer DV-353 CodeFree DVD Player

The excellent priced Pioneer DV-353 is a super value. Compared to most of the other code free DVD players, this model gives you a wide range of features at a still affordable price.

The DV-353 is packed with features that rival most of the higher end players. For starters, it plays discs from regions 1-6. It is however, important to note that this code free DVD player can play both PAL and NTSC discs providing you have a NTSC and PAL multisystem TV. For example, if you live in the USA you will only be able to play PAL region 2 discs from Europe if your TV can play PAL. This is important because 99% of the TV's manufactured in the US are broadcast in NTSC. The Pioneer played my DVD's from other regions with no problems. While I was in Europe I picked up a region 2 copy of Total Recall and brought it back to the states and it played with no problems at all. The transfer to DVD of animated discs such as Shrek and Toy Story really looked brilliant. There isn't too much that this player can't do, both CDR's and MP3's downloaded from my computer played with no hassle. The Pioneer also plays discs encoded with the new RCE encoding, such as The Patriot, which worked out good because many of the major studios are now encoding discs with this. The player features twin wave laser pick ups, which makes for some really impressive image quality. Scrolling between chapters was a breeze with this player. I was also able to scroll within a chapter at variable speeds. The audio on the Pioneer DV-353 really packs quite a punch. It offers both Dolby Digital and DTS surround processing and a 192kHz/24-bit D-A converter. This player also boasts many other features that have become standard in most of today's players. Some of these features include the zoom function and the quick resume function, which is very convenient. I also own quite a few interactive DVD's and changing the angles on those movies was quite easy also.

Aesthetically the player is very attractive. It's ultra slim, black design is a nice looking addition to any home theater set up. The build of the player is very strong and sold, given its size. The loading tray for the DVD's slides in and out quickly and is very sturdy. The front of the player itself is pretty bare bones, with the buttons you need to get started and that's about it. Most of the operations are handled via the remote and so this really wasn't much of a problem. Ergonomically the remote leaves a little to be desired, but it is easy enough to get around and pretty straight forward. The on screen set up menu can be easily accessed from the remote and is pretty easy to navigate through however, newbies to the DVD arena may find the set up menu a bit cryptic or confusing. You will have many options when hooking this DVD player up as there are many different options when it comes to outputs. The player comes with one of each of the following component video, s-video, digital optical, coaxial, and composite as well as left and right audio outputs. I found that hooking the player up using the component video outputs provided me with the best picture.
