Video Performance – 96/100

This is a fantastic DVD player, with high-end video upconversion – one of the best I’ve tested. The unit did a fantastic job up converting my standard 480i resolution Braveheart DVD to 1080i. The DV-48AV will perform up conversion in all high definition resolutions included 1080p though I found that stopping at 1080i gave me a better picture. It even rivaled my $1000 Sony Blu Ray player. There was great depth and natural detail with no false edges. The Code Free DVD modification World Clad WC-12H chip set performed flawlessly playing my region 2 and 4 discs with automatic, seamless conversion and no extra set up. When performing PAL to NTSC conversion with our European region 2 DVDs, the 20mb built in converter also performed flawlessly on the LCD TV viewed.

Other Considerations – 95/100

As mentioned above, the hardware chip mod performed perfectly. Also upgraded in this Pioneer Elite player over the regular line of Pioneer DVD Players is the power supply, the drive boards, as well as most of the transistor pieces. This Region Free DVD player includes a 1.2a HDMI output port for up converted DVD material. I thought the sound from the coaxial output (24 bit audio DAC) was full and rich, and kudos to Pioneer for keeping this valuable audio ouput. At around $400 this player rivals code free DVD players from Denon and Yamaha that are $300 more expensive. It has almost everything you need except for possibly a 25 pound anti-vibration chassis. At least at this moment, this is a very strong buy.
